5 Habits Every SG Point Person Should Practice on Sunday

A few years ago, I found myself aimlessly wandering through the church atrium. I thought to myself, “Why are you even here!?” I felt challenged in that moment to increase my presence on Sundays. Although I didn’t have a role that was expressed as vividly as worship pastor, preacher, or children’s minister, I did have major ways in which I could contribute. No matter if your church meets on Sunday or another day of the week, here are five habits you should practice to better your local church, small groups, and personal ministry.

Be Present and Visible
Being present and visible allows current and potential group leaders to connect with you. They feel empowered to know they are able to bring their questions, concerns, and ideas to you. It is also a great time to just “catch up” with leaders!

Talk Small Groups
As you meet with people of your local congregation, talk small groups! Ask people what group they’re a part of, how their group is going, and see if you are able to do anything to support their group experience. If you hear an answer you don’t like, “I am not a part of a group, for instance, you are able to address it in the moment. Maybe you’re able to help them find a group or feel empowered to start their own!

Meet New People
Look for people with that lookin their eyes. You know the one where they aren’t entirely sure where to go, what to do, or when to do it. Greet them warmly and help them find the appropriate assistance for their need. Once you do so, let them know that whenever they’re ready, you want to help them find a small group to connect with!

Support Your Pastor
This should happen everyday, but on Sundays, find what your pastor needs and help them achieve it. Let your pastor know that you are his or her biggest cheerleader. Post sermon notes to social media, be attentive and active during the sermon, and talk about the message following the service, with other members. We all love support and encouragement can mean a lot to the person sharing from the pulpit each week.

Fuel Up
As point people, a trap we can often fall into is using our work to grow our faith. That shouldn’t be. We must take time to grow in our faith through daily devotions, prayer, and challenge ourselves with weekly messages about Jesus.  Sermons aren’t intended for everyone else, they are directed to empower staff and point people, as well.

These are five simple action points that I encourage you to keep in mind as you tackle each Sunday. By living these principles out, you are also setting a great example for fellow Small Group Leaders to follow.
