As a Small Group Point Person, it is so important to connect with your small group leaders regularly. This action cannot be overdone and is vital to leaders feeling valued. It is also essential to communicate in various methods throughout each semester and calendar year. Phone conversations may be more useful for one leader, while email or face-to-face discussions could be the best for someone else. No matter your method, as a point person, you should have a focus on what each encounter accomplishes. I would encourage you to ask these five questions each time you speak with a small group leader.

How are YOU doing?
It is essential that each leader understands that they are more than a number or volunteer. I would note that this should make up the majority of each conversation. They should feel valued and celebrated as people first. Learn how their family is growing, get to know their workplace environment, and learn what passions move their spirit. By doing so, you may unearth a God-given calling within them.

How is the group helping you grow spiritually?
This question somewhat joins with the previously stated one but focuses on their walk with the Lord. I am sure this question excites the pastor inside of each Point Person. By asking this question, you will be able to help each leader see how and where the Lord is moving in their life. What a leader may have seen as a simple conversation with a member, could be the Lord challenging them in growth.

What is your group doing outside of your designated time together?
It is so important for each group to have fun together, outside of their regular time. Emphasize becoming best friends with everyone isn’t the goal, but growing in relationships is essential to succeeding as a group. Encourage leaders to throw parties for one another, serve together, and even attend worship with their group.

Are you having fun?
The idea of fun could be lost if a leader focuses too much on executing meetings, events, and tasks within the group. While performing tasks are essential to a group’s success, each leader should understand that people are the focus of each small group. Make sure they keep this focus. If fun is absent, passion for continuing will often leave soon after.

How can I better serve you?
Reiterate that you are eager to serve them. Ensure leaders know their value to you and then dive into what you can do for their group, their members, and any other group related activity. This question can be as open or focus as you’d like.

There are many more questions to ask and focuses to have. I would encourage you to explore some of your own questions that are centered around the success and health of your small group leaders. Have fun connecting with your leaders in a new way in the new year.
